At Holy Cross Catholic School, we believe that leadership is not just a title—it’s a mindset that begins early and is nurtured throughout a student’s journey. From the youngest learners to our middle schoolers, every student has opportunities to develop confidence, responsibility, and the ability to lead with compassion. Leadership begins as early as Kindergarten, where students take on classroom jobs and participate in Mass by speaking in front of the school community. As they grow, students continue building these skills through structured programs such as the Buddy Program, Student Council, and Student Ambassadors. Additionally, select students have the honor of representing Holy Cross as Student Speakers at the Annual Donor Dinner. Through these experiences, our students learn to lead by example, serve others, and develop the skills they need to make a difference in their communities.
The Student Ambassador Program at Holy Cross Catholic School is an opportunity for students in grades 6-8 to develop leadership, public speaking, and communication skills while representing our school. Ambassadors play a vital role in welcoming prospective families, leading campus tours, and serving as student representatives at community events. Through hands-on experience and dedicated training, students gain confidence in speaking and interacting with others. Each year, our ambassadors participate in a special training session with the University of Portland’s ambassador team, where they learn valuable skills from experienced student leaders.
The Holy Cross Student Council is a leadership opportunity for middle school students in grades 6-8 to represent their classmates and help make a positive impact on our school community. Each year, students have the chance to run for office and participate in student body elections. Once elected, council members take on the important role of planning and organizing school events such as free dress days, spirit days, the Halloween Carnival, leading assemblies, leading prayer, and other fun activities that bring our community together.
The Buddy Program at Holy Cross Catholic School is a cherished tradition that fosters connection and support between older and younger students. Throughout the school year, middle school students are paired with younger buddies in Pre-K, Kindergarten, or 1st grade. Older buddies help their younger counterparts acclimate to the school environment, read stories with them, accompany them to Mass, and join them on selected field trips.
This program also gives older students the opportunity to develop leadership skills in a caring and approachable way. For students who may not be drawn to more formal leadership roles, the Buddy Program offers a unique and rewarding way to lead by example.
