Holy Cross Catholic School Students Embrace Service with Lenten 'Simple Meal' Initiative

As part of the Lenten season, students at Holy Cross Catholic School are demonstrating their commitment to service and charity through the annual 'Simple Meal' initiative. Following the call of Pope Francis to "give up, take up, and lift up," students are embracing the values of fasting, charity, and almsgiving to support those in need.

From March 7th to April 11th, students will give up their regular home lunches each Friday and take up a simple meal of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (or cheese for peanut-free classrooms), pretzels, and fruit. Through this small sacrifice, they will lift up others by contributing donations to students at St. Elizabeth Catholic School in Altadena, California.

The initiative takes on special significance this year as the community of Altadena continues to recover from the devastating Eaton Fire in January. While St. Elizabeth Catholic School itself was undamaged, many students and families in the area lost their homes, leaving a profound impact on the tight-knit, diverse, and hard-working community.

"Our students are learning that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference," said Principal Mr. Tagorda. "Through the Simple Meal initiative, they not only practice self-discipline but also develop a deeper sense of empathy and generosity."

Suggested donations range from $3 to $5, but additional contributions are warmly welcomed. The funds collected will go directly toward supporting students and families at St. Elizabeth Catholic School as they rebuild their lives.

The Simple Meal initiative is just one example of how Holy Cross Catholic School prioritizes faith in action. By participating, students not only engage in Lenten traditions but also embody the school's mission to nurture compassionate, service-oriented leaders of tomorrow.
